Case Study

Here's how I found it. Someone had done a previous patch here (it was multi-layered with cedar shingles.... which really isn't appropriate) and the raccoon returned to the same place. It's funny how the raccoons do that... but they do.

After the loose stuff was removed this is how it looked. You can see what I mean by layered the cedar shingles.

I cleaned it all up to one layer only and then started the reassembly. I use brown metal shims as reinforcement below the shingles so when the raccoons return again they have to scratch through metal and that sometimes throws them off to another roof.... hopefully.

On this roof repair, someone else had already tried to fix it before, with layers of cedar shingles. That’s not an appropriate patch solution, and the raccoons returned to the same place. It’s funny how the raccoons do that… but they do.

I removed all the loose material and what remained of the layered shingle patch. Once I was back to one layer I began the reassembly. I used brown metal shims as reinforcement below the shingles.

The idea here is that when the raccoons return they will now have to claw their way through metal. Hopefully that throws them off and they move on to another roof.
