On inspection of this roof, I discovered shingles that were tight against a vent. Shingle manufacturers are recomending a 1″ water channel at the sides, to allow for water flow. Considering the distance from the water stains inside, I ruled that out as the cause.

Next I came across a drip edge flashing that was not used correctly for a shingle roof. This type of flashing is generally used for metal roofs, not asphalt shingles.

The troublesome drip edge flashing was removed and we caulk terminated it so that any water running down would kick over the edge instead of towards the centre of the roof. We also put a piece of step flashing over the ridge, so any water that might be able to get under the shingles would instead be shed back on top of another shingle.

We also put a piece of step flashing over the ridge, so any water that might be able to get under the shingles would instead be shed back on top of another shingle. This piece of step flashing was not visible — buried under shingles— but I believe it’s critical for a successful repair.
